Northeast Utilities Predoctoral Scholarship in Marine
Sciences for Women and Minorities
The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut
will offer a new graduate scholarship for women and minority
students seeking the Ph.D. in Oceanography. The Northeast
Utilities Predoctoral Scholarship in Marine Sciences will
provide a Graduate Research Assistantship (20 hrs/week) for
the 2007/2008 calendar year. This assistantship will carry
an annual stipend of about $27,000 with a full tuition waiver
worth approximately $20,722 and subsidized medical insurance.
This scholarship is for a one year period and may be renewed
for up to two additional years. Continued financial support
throughout the recipient’s graduate degree program,
beyond the first three years, will be in the form of research
and/or teaching assistantships. Renewal of financial support
is contingent upon satisfactory progress.
Funding for the scholarship is from the Northeast Utilities
Marine Science Program Fund, a private endowment to the Department
of Marine Sciences, which provides support for development
of programs to encourage participation and retention of women
and minorities in environmental marine sciences.
To apply for the scholarship, an application for graduate
studies in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University
of Connecticut must be submitted by January 15th, 2007. Applicants
must state their intention to earn the Ph.D. degree in Oceanography
and follow application instructions on the Department of Marine
Sciences website,
www.marinesciences.uconn.edu.
Prospective students are strongly encouraged to directly contact
potential faculty advisors whose research interests are consistent
with their own.
